Lady Gaga Channels 'Wizard Of Oz' For 'Applause' Performance on 'GMA': Watch
When Lady Gaga debuted "Applause" live at the MTV Video Music Awards last month, the pop superstar opted to showcase a new wardrobe every few seconds and snicker at standard pop performance conventions. On "Good Morning America" on Monday morning (Sept. 9), Gaga once again blew up the one-outfit-per-performance model and cycled through multiple characters from "The Wizard of Oz," all while the Tin Man, Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion danced beside her.

Gaga began the performance by demurely singing some of "Over The Rainbow" as her Oz cohorts gazed on in amazement. "I live for your applause!" Gaga-as-Dorothy (Gagorthy?) declared before trotting down the faux yellow brick road, ducking behind a curtain to morph into the Good Witch of the North, and then ditching that blonde wig and bubblegum dress to instruct a crowd of flower-headed Little Monsters to clap along.

Following the performance, Lady Gaga chatted with Robin Roberts about her whirlwind half-decade since her breakout hit "Just Dance," and why she chose to take on "The Wizard of Oz" as a thematic template for her latest "GMA" performance. "All of these outfits and all of these wigs that I've been changing in over the years -- this is my way of assimilating, and this is my way of surviving," says Gaga. "This is my way of getting to Oz, to have all my dreams come true… Dorothy was able to transform in order to survive."

"ARTPOP," Gaga's latest full-length opus, arrives on Nov. 11, alongside an app she has described as "a musical and visual engineering system that combines music, art, fashion and technology." "Applause" has peaked at No. 4 on the Hot 100 chart, and dips to No. 6 on the current tally.
